What is barleywine?
Barleywine, also spelled as barley wine, is a powerful beer style with a high alcohol content and a pronounced malt character. The name literally means barley wine, but it is beer. The reference to wine mainly relates to the strength and character of this style.
The color can vary from golden amber to deep copper-brown. Therefore, barleywine does not have to be as dark as a stout or porter. The emphasis is generally on rich malt flavors, complemented by fruity nuances, hops, and a warming alcoholic character.
What does a barleywine taste like?
You may encounter flavors of caramel, toffee, biscuit, and bread crust. Fruity accents can be reminiscent of raisins, figs, or other dried fruits. Some variants are soft and round, while others are more heavily hopped and distinctly bitter.
The malt gives the beer body, while hops and fermentation determine how much sweetness and bitterness you ultimately experience. As a result, two barleywines can taste quite different, even if they have approximately the same alcohol percentage.
What is the difference between English and American Barleywine?
English Barleywine usually places more emphasis on malt, with rich flavors of caramel, toffee, and fruity accents. Hops support the whole, although English variants can also have a clear bitterness.
American Barleywine often has a more pronounced hop character, for example with citrus, pine, and a firm bitterness. The full malt base offers a counterweight to that.
These are general directions. Every brewer chooses their own balance, and the character of the beer can further change with aging.
Is barleywine always sweet?
Barleywine can come across as sweet due to its full body and flavors of caramel and ripe fruit. However, the style is not automatically overtly sweet. Some variants have a drier finish or a firm hop bitterness.

What does barrel aging add to barleywine?
Barleywine lends itself well to aging in wooden barrels. The wood and the previous contents of the barrel can add extra flavors, for example vanilla, spices, or influences from bourbon, whisky, rum, or wine.
The rich malt base can blend beautifully with those extra layers of flavor. How the result tastes depends on the base beer, the barrel, and the brewer's choices. In our barrel-aged collectionyou will also discover barrel-aged barleywines.
How do you drink a barleywine?
Take your time and do not serve the beer too cold. As it warms up slightly in your glass, aromas and flavors can open up further. A smaller pour can be nice for discovering the full character step by step.
A glass with sufficient room for the aromas helps you to fully experience the malty, fruity, and any potential barrel notes.
