Untappd: discover, rate, and share your craft beer experience

Experiencing specialty beer is becoming increasingly social and interactive these days. One of the most popular apps for this is Untappd. With this app, you can discover, rate, and share beers with other beer enthusiasts. But how exactly does Untappd work? How do you rate a beer, and what does the score actually tell you?

How do you use Untappd?

Untappd is a free app for iOS and Android specifically designed for beer lovers. The basic functions are simple:

1. Check in a beer – when you drink a beer, you can “check it in” by searching for it in the database or by scanning the barcode.

2. Add details – you can make notes on taste, aroma, color, and the glass in which you are serving the beer.

3. Share photos – take a photo of your beer or the location where you are drinking it and share it with your network.

4. Follow and discover – follow friends, breweries, or pubs to get inspiration and discover new beers.

The app also has special features such as badges, rankings, and events, which adds a gamification element to discovering beers.

How do you rate a beer?

Rating a beer in Untappd can be done in several ways:

• Give a score – on a scale of 0 to 5 stars. You can use half stars to provide more nuance.

• Make notes – describe the taste, smell, bitterness, sweetness, body, and aftertaste. This way, you can look back later to see why you did or didn't like a beer.

• Use tags – for example “fruity,” “hoppy,” “stout,” or “IPA” to find and compare the beer more quickly.

A personal rating helps not only yourself, but also other users looking for inspiration.

What can you deduce from the Untappd score?

The Untappd score is the average of all ratings from users worldwide. It provides a general idea of how popular or well-rated a beer is, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

• Taste is subjective – a beer with a low score might perfectly align with your personal preferences.

• Number of ratings – a high score with only a few reviews says less than an average score from thousands of ratings.

• Check the trend – you can see whether a beer is consistently well-rated or if its popularity varies significantly.

In short: the score is a useful guide, but your own taste experience remains the deciding factor.

Untappd is an indispensable tool for every beer lover: it helps you discover new beers, share experiences, and develop your taste profile. By checking in beers, rating them, and viewing the Untappd score, you gain insight into both your personal preferences and the trends within the world of specialty beer. It is more than an app; it is a social journey of discovery in a glass.
