Withered White
A light, drinkable, slightly cloudy, not-too-sweet, golden-yellow top-fermented beer, 4.5% alcohol with a slightly tart taste due to the wheat. Berne Abbey Beer is the only Dutch Norbertine beer. Berne Abbey is the oldest still-existing abbey in the Netherlands, dating back to 1134. From the very beginning of the abbey until the pillaging in 1579, beer was brewed in the original Berne. From 1639 onwards, blond and brown beer was brewed at the abbey in Heeswijk. The Berne Abbey Beer Foundation has been brewing the two beers Norbertijn Blond (6%) and Prior Dubbel (8%) since September 13, 2015, the Abt Tripel since September 18, 2016, and Witheren Wit since March 26, 2017. Top-fermented beers with bottle conditioning, brewed to their own recipe on a limited scale by the Berne Abbey Beer Foundation’s own brewmaster at a partner abbey. The proceeds benefit the centuries-old Norbertine order of Berne Abbey. On the abbey grounds in Heeswijk, there was already a private brewhouse in 1639, which, incidentally, later disappeared. The intention is to eventually have an own brewhouse at the abbey again. The Tasting Room is open to visitors daily, and at 2:00 PM the Beer Tour starts from the Tasting Room.
